The Machine Made Cigar Process
Machine made cigars are known for being an inexpensive way to enjoy tobacco.
Machine made cigars are produced out of high quality tobacco filler, yet because
the rolling process is automated, the price is reduced.
Producing Machine made cigars is pretty simple and can double the amount as hand
made cigars. It is began with the wrapper leaf, spread out on one side of a
rotating aluminum disc. In one swift motion, little arms reach out and grab the
tobacco bunch, then the operator puts another wrapper on the ready side of the
disc. Taking only a few seconds, the rolled filler is covered with the wrapper
and then the process is repeated over and over again.
For over 40 years, the equipment used to make machine made cigars has been
unchanged. Although, there is a large amount of maintenance to keep the machine
working.
The filler of machine made cigars, is made of shredded pieces of tobacco, also
machine produced. In higher quality cigars, the shredded pieces are uniform in
grade, texture and size. Lower grade machine made cigars, may vary in quality
and you will most likely find pieces of tobacco stalks or stems in the filler.
In high quality cigars, a tobacco leaf is used for the binder. Machine made
cigars use a homogenized tobacco leaf. Typically made from ground up tobacco
scraps and mixed with combustible agents plus water. It is then stretched and
rolled into a large sheet like paper.
The wrapper of a cigar gives it the form and protection that any cigar needs.
Machine made cigars use dry wrappers, meaning they will not mature like hand
made cigars.
